Optical sciences and engineering will be a significant economic driver
for the 21st Century.
Optics and photonics are rapidly growing high-tech areas that impact
the fields of bio-medicine, information technology, defense, manufacturing,
energy, and the environment, as well as support educational research
activities.
This emerging field promises in-demand, high-paying jobs, and New
Mexico is poised to make a difference. The New Mexico optics community
has developed an education plan to train students for work and careers
in the optical engineering and photonics industry.
This unique model is being described as an "education and career
ladder" from which students exit and enter the workforce based
on the push towards enhanced education, or the pull of employment
